After traveling to Costa Rica in 2016, Glen and Margie Yaeger decided they wanted to bring a little bit of their trip back to their community in Hagerstown, Maryland. They opened a cafe serving quality coffee and a blend of Costa Rican and American dishes in a renovated farmhouse.
The couple called their cafe “Pura Vida,” meaning “pure life” in Spanish. This phrase reflects the Costa Rican value of cherishing simple pleasures – which the Yaegers hope to give the Hagerstown community a taste of at their cafe.
After successfully launching in 2017, Pura Vida was one of eight finalists in the HUB City Business competition in Hagerstown, for which they won a Clover point-of-sale system. In the year Pura Vida has been in business, they have built up a base of returning customers – and see new customers each week. They consistently receive five-star reviews on Yelp and Facebook.
The Yaegers worked with SCORE mentor Robert Jones on financial forecasting and marketing strategy. Jones also guided them through the HUB City Business competition. Margie says, “SCORE has been a key resource in helping us confidently move forward with our business.”
